Configure GitHub Copilot
The OAI Compatible Provider for Copilot VS Code extension adds LAYSO AI models to the GitHub Copilot Chat model picker. This guide keeps one workflow that matches the supplied screenshots.
One key for every platform model
One LAYSO AI API key can access the models available on the platform. LAYSO AI bills at the selected model's current price; every successful request has an itemized charge, and failed tasks are not charged.
Requirements
The extension requires an active GitHub Copilot Individual subscription and does not currently support Copilot Business or Enterprise accounts. It also requires VS Code 1.104.0 or later. Without Copilot Individual, use Cursor, Cline, or another tool with a dedicated guide.
Prerequisites
- Install or update to the latest stable Visual Studio Code ↗.
- Enable GitHub Copilot Chat with an active Copilot Individual subscription.
- Create an API key on the LAYSO AI API Keys page ↗.
- Copy the exact model ID from LAYSO AI Models & Pricing ↗.
Configuration steps
Step 1: install the extension
Search for OAI Compatible Provider for Copilot in the VS Code Marketplace, confirm that the publisher is Johnny Zhao, and select Install.
You can also install it from a terminal:
code --install-extension johnny-zhao.oai-compatible-copilotReload VS Code after installation.
Step 2: open Language Models management
After installing the extension, open the VS Code Command Palette, search for, and run:
Chat: Manage Language ModelsStep 3: open OAICopilot configuration
Find OAI Compatible in Language Models management and open its configuration entry to reach OAICopilot Configuration.
If the entry is not visible, run OAICopilot: Open Configuration UI from the Command Palette or select OAICopilot in the VS Code status bar.
Step 4: configure the connection and add a provider
Enter these values under Global Configuration:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Global Base URL | https://api.layso.ai/v1 |
| Global API Key | Complete key copied from the LAYSO AI API Keys page |
Leave the other global options at their defaults and select Save Global Configuration. Then select Add Provider under Provider Management farther down the page:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Provider ID | layso-ai |
| Provider Name | LAYSO AI |
| Base URL | https://api.layso.ai/v1 |
| API Key | Use the global API key |
| API Mode | openai |
Save the provider after entering these values.
Step 5: add a model
After saving the provider, select Add Model under Model Management:
- Select
layso-aias the provider. - Paste the exact model ID shown on Models & Pricing.
- Configure context length, maximum output, Vision, Tool Calling, and reasoning options to match the model's real capabilities.
- Save the model.
Do not guess aliases or capability values. Follow the information shown on the LAYSO AI model page.
Step 6: enable and select the model
Find OAI Compatible in Language Models management and enable the model you added. Return to Chat, open the model picker, and select the model labeled LAYSO AI (OAICopilot) under Other Models.
If it does not appear immediately, run Developer: Reload Window or restart VS Code.
Verify the configuration
Confirm that the LAYSO AI model appears at the bottom of the input box, then send a short prompt:
Introduce yourself in one sentence. After it succeeds, verify the model, token use, and itemized charge in the LAYSO AI user app before starting a long task.
Capability boundaries
Chat and Agent
The extension adds configured models to the VS Code Chat picker. LAYSO AI can handle the main chat conversation, but code application, certain tool calls, or helper tasks may still use built-in VS Code or GitHub capabilities.
Inline completion and semantic search
Selecting a LAYSO AI chat model does not redirect all Copilot traffic. Inline completion, semantic search, and embedding-dependent features may continue to use GitHub services.
Subscriptions and managed accounts
This extension workflow is intended for Copilot Individual. Business and Enterprise accounts are outside its current support scope and should use an integration approved by their organization administrator.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | What to check |
|---|---|
| The extension cannot be used | Confirm the VS Code version and verify that the signed-in account has an active Copilot Individual subscription |
| The model is missing from the picker | Confirm that the provider and model were saved, run Chat: Manage Language Models, enable the model, and reload the window |
401 / 403 | Copy the API key again, remove spaces or line breaks, and confirm the global settings were saved |
404 | Use https://api.layso.ai/v1 as the Base URL; do not append another /v1 or a complete request endpoint |
| Unknown model | Copy the exact model ID from Models & Pricing instead of using a display name or guessed alias |
| Chat works but Agent fails | Confirm that the model supports tools and review the extension's Tool Calling setting |
| No LAYSO AI charge record | Confirm that LAYSO AI (OAICopilot) is selected and the request succeeded; failed tasks are not charged |
Billing and security
- LAYSO AI bills only requests that reach the platform and complete successfully.
- GitHub bills the Copilot subscription and its built-in features separately.
- Never expose a complete API key in screenshots, logs, project files, or Git.
- This extension is community-maintained and is not an official GitHub, Microsoft, or LAYSO AI product.
